Message from Mike Day on 07-04-2005:

Dear Parents-

GREAT JOB THIS WEEKEND!!  Sunday's final was an epic 12 inning battle!  Big Red is still a little short on arms and all the pitchers had to work overtime this weekend.  The boys fought hard, never gave up and Coach Haskins was awesome!

The site for tomorrow's SPBL game vs. Prairie Gravel (P.G.) is still to be determined.  There is much confusion among the SPBL coaches as to who is hosting the tournament games as no e-mail was sent out and nothing is posted on the website.  There is also much angst among the coaches as to the tournament format, which is single elimination and requires the host team pay for field time and umpire(s)...and we paid $400 for this tournament!  I talked to Sam Sorce, the P.G. coach this evening at 7:00, and he's scrambling to get a field.  Weather permitting, there will be a game tomorrow either at P.G. or at Beese.  I should know first thing in the morning.

If we lose, we will play Carol Stream Wednesday at Beese, if we win, we will play another SPBL tournament game...against the winner of Arlington Longshots/Windy City Wildcats.

There is apparently an error in our tournament schedule for this weekend's "Border War" in WI that is posted at
http://www.metromilwaukeesports.com/tournybaseball.php
When I click on the "U-14 Border War Schedule" I am unable to open it up.  Other coaches (and everyone else I've talked to) are experiencing a similar problem.  If you have success opening this schedule, please let me know.

GO BIG RED!!

I will provide everyone with a complete July schedule at today's practice.

Message from Mike Day on 06-29-2005:

Dear Parents-

I've spoken with some of you off the record about your interest in the Nationals in Kingsport, TN.  After finally talking to the tournament director last night, here's the story:

We'd be playing at 60'/90', against AAA teams (the team we lost to in the championship in Omaha was a majors team...one division higher), our first game would be Monday afternoon, July 25th.  We could not be eliminated before Thursday and, if we make it to the championship, we could play until Sunday.

Your costs would be: HOTEL:  $65/night for a minimum of three, and a maximum of six, nights. GAS:$150 total (at 20 miles gallon - it's 675 miles to Kingsport). TOURNAMENT FEE: $50/family.  FOOD: ???

Please let me know your thoughts on this matter.  If we are going to enter the National Championship Tournament, we need to enter by Thursday.

GO BIG RED!

Dear Parents-

Our schedule for the week-

Tuesday - at Longshots (still waiting for directions)
Thursday - 3:30 practice at Beese North
------------------------------BYB TOURNAMENT-----------------------------------
Friday - 6:00 game vs. Arlington Hts at Beese North
Saturday - 9:30 game vs. Downers Grove Longshots at Beese North
5:00 game vs. Edgebrook at Beese North
Sunday - TBD by our play (12:00 semi's/3:00 championship)

I've attached the entire tournament schedule.  We might need a hand from a parent to help out at Beese South if the need arises...but only during our games, no additional parental help will be necessary...no "game-sitting" since it's BYB's tournament.

Message from Mike Day on 06-23 2005:

Dear Parents-

Sunday's practice with Coach Haskins will be from 10:00 -  11:30 at The Hand.  It is NOT mandatory!  However, if you will not be there, please call Coach Haskins at 847-718-1349 and let him know.  Tuesday we will NOT practice...instead we will play at the Arlington Longshots at  6:00. I will forward directions as soon as I get them.

As you may know, Tuesday night was the last "official" game Bill and I will coach Big Red.  We may step in for Coach Haskins when he is unable to attend a game or practice...but for the most part, we've passed the baton.

The boys will be better served by a professional high school coach who, in the last month of the season, will more aptly prepare them for their next baseball level.

It's been a great season and an awesome six years.  I have seen many of these boys grow from little boys into young men.  I've looked forward to every game and practice and I truly cherished the time I spent with your sons.  They have made me a better person.  GO BIG RED!

Thanks,
Mike

Message from Mike Day on 06-14-2005:

Dear Parents,

Omaha is almost here!

Our game schedule:  Friday at 8:00 a.m. and 12:00, Saturday's games are determined by our play.

Because we play so early Friday, please plan on arriving Thursday.
There will be a lot going on at Rosenblatt Stadium on Thursday.  For more info on Thursday's schedule, go to:  http://www.kcsports.org/opening_celebrations.htm

For exact directions to the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites in Carter Lake, Iowa, click on "Map/Directions" at:  http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/ex/1/en/hd/iaclk?irs=null
For directions to the Council Bluffs Sports Complex, go to:  http://kcsports.org/content/maps.htm

The tournament organizers provide every player one general admission ticket to any game.  The CWS schedule is 1:00 & 6:00 games Friday, Saturday and Sunday.  For more info on the CWS schedule, click on "Game Schedule" at:  http://www.cwsomaha.com/html/home/index.asp

Considering Big Red's game schedule, the only certain opportunity to see a CWS game will be at 6:00 on Friday.  I am requesting that the team meet and sit together.  This is a request, not a requirement...it is your vacation, too.  But half the fun is being together.  Unfortunately, Friday's 6:00 game pits # 3 ranked, home-state Nebraska vs. Arizona State.  Seats will be at a premium and, with general admission tickets being good for any game, there is no guarantee of admission.  According to tournament organizers, for us to get into Rosenblatt Stadium for Friday night's game, we'll have to leave immediately following Big Red's 12:00 game.  THERE ARE NO RESERVED SEATS AVAILABLE!!  Please get back to me with any thoughts you might have on this matter.

For Omaha's weather, go to http://www.weather.com/weather/local/68107?par=OAP&site=GENXV&code=null

If you ordered (a) Road To Omaha t-shirt(s), please bring $15/shirt (checks payable to Barrington Big Red) tonight to our 5:30 game vs. Hoffman or to tomorrow's 5:30 - 7:00 practice at Sage.

Please confirm that you received this e-mail!

GO BIG RED!

Thanks,
Mike

Message from Mike Day on 06-09-2005:

Dear Parents-

I have called each of you to make you aware of the unfortunate news that A.J. is out for two-to-six weeks with a hip injury...leaving us with only six healthy players (Owen has mono, Max is out for the season with a broken elbow, Steve is out for at least a week with rotator cuff tendonitis and Johnny is out after getting hit this weekend) and unable to field a team for the Diamondkings Tournament.

There are however, two silver-lined clouds in the dark skies that have covered our team as of late. First, I am very pleased to announce the addition of Mark Minner to our squad!  He's a fine player and young man and should really help Big Red!  Secondly, Dr.Nixon examined John today and says he'll only be out two-to-three weeks!  And, don't forget, Chappy will be playing for us in Omaha!

I am adding a practice Sunday from 10:30 to 12:00 at The Hand,  24499 Kelsey Road in Lake Barrington, to help assimilate Mark to our team.  If anyone has an extra Barrington jersey from last year (or the year before) that might fit Mark (he's probably a men's medium), please bring it on Sunday.

Please e-mail me confirmation of receipt of this e-mail at your earliest possible convenience!

Message from Mike Day on 05-30-2005:

Dear Parents,

I am proud of how our team performed against difficult competition and under difficult circumstances this weekend.  If we can just get healthy, we'll be more than o.k.

Our schedule for the week is as follows:

Wednesday:  5:30 Practice @ Sage
Saturday:  Home (Sage) DH vs. Crystal Lake 1:00 & 3:15
Sunday:  Home (BHS) DH vs. Windy City 11:00 & 1:15

Additionally, I have two requests for Big Red parents:

1.  Please do not approach me, Coach Deevy, or Coach Haskins before, or in the middle of, a game.   This is not the appropriate time to have a conversation with the coaches about personal issues such as your son's playing time, positions, etc.  We are always available after games or via the phone/email.

As a parent who has had children play sports for over ten years, if there was an issue that I was particularly emotional about, I tried to wait 24 hours to let the dust settle first. It helped.

2.  Please go to www.barringtonyouthbaseball.com and review the Barrington Youth Baseball Parental Code of Conduct that you were required to sign at the beginning of the season.  Failure to abide by this code can have serious consequences.

Congratulations to all the graduating eighth-graders!

Go Big Red!

Dear Parents-

Tough weekend of baseball...but considering all the injuries, we fared well.  I'm  looking forward to some good luck, good health and good baseball.

Next weeks schedule is as follows:

Tuesday- 7:00 Game at Mundelein. We'll play at Ivanhoe Field which is located on Route 83 just north of Route 176.  Please arrive by 6:00.

Thursday-  Game vs. Prairie Gravel.  No specific information yet...I'll keep you posted.

When we originally signed up for the Schaumburg Seminoles Tournament, the site was Olympic Park in Schaumburg.  Due to the great national interest, the tournament was moved to the Lumberyard in Bourbonnais.  I'm sorry for the long drive, but at least our schedule isn't bad.  We do face very difficult competition.

Our weekend tournament information:
Friday Game vs. Pony Express at 6:15, Field 6
Saturday Game vs. Cincy Flames at 8:15 p.m., Field 6
Sunday Games vs. Orland Park and Top Tier at 3:45, Field 6 and 6:00, Field 2
Monday if we advance.

Also, I need a copy of your son's birth certificate for him to be eligible to play in Thursday night's tournament game.  WITHOUT A  BIRTH CERTIFICATE, YOUR SON CANNOT PLAY!

This email is a follow up to the email sent earlier this morning.

Attached is the amended schedule.  In an effort to enable a larger number of teams the opportunity to advance to the Championship round on Sunday, I have reduced the number of preliminary games from four to three.  With a four game pool play, only four of seventeen teams would have advanced.  Reducing pool play to three games (Thursday, Friday and Saturday), I am able to increase the number of teams that will advance to eight.  I hope you find this a positive situation.

Because we have seventeen teams, one team needs to play four games.  Host team Palatine will play the extra game.  Palatine's statistics in this game will not count towards advancement to championship play.  Palatine will play Lombard on Saturday morning at 9:00 am at Maple Park.  In doing this, Lombard is assured of playing three games in pool play.  Lombard's statistics will count in this game towards advancement.  Palatine will play this game at a competitive level.

Map quest Links to the parks are attached.

Please acknowledge your receipt of this updated schedule either by email or telephone.  My contact information is listed below.

Dear Parents,

A great BIG thank you goes out to all the parents who helped with the cookout!

For today's game at Beese, please arrive at 4:45.

Tomorrow we will hold a "practice" at Palatine High School, 1111 N. Rohlwing Road,  where we will watch the Barrington vs. Palatine varsity game together as a team.  Please have your son there when the game starts at 4:30.  (I'll be there for the pre-game at 4:00).  The boys need to bring a chair, a pen and somethng to write on.  We will have the boys write down both general observations and those specific to their primary positions as we sit on the Barrington side.

Also, I need a copy of your son's birth certificate for him to be eligible to play in Thursday night's tournament game.  WITHOUT A  BIRTH CERTIFICATE, YOUR SON CANNOT PLAY!

Message from Mike Day on 02-09-2005:

Dear Parents,

As a matter of clarification, I need to discuss volleyball.

It was correctly brought up to me that "(volleyball) is a school function, ... (the players) will not be penalized for late arrival."

The attendance policy stated "For each unexcused absence, players will sit out one regular season game.  Every player gets one "mulligan," meaning one unexcused absence without penalty.  Excused absences include illness, church activities, school activities and special family activities. This rule does not apply to the team-only practice we are adding beginning in February."

Late arrival from a school event will not count as an absence, and will not cause any player to sit out a game.

However, that being said, when a player misses or comes late to a practice, I feel it hurts the entire team.  When I say the players who attend the entire game sim will be the only players pitching, I am mking a statement to the entire team.  I am rewarding those players who are there on time and for the session's entirety, and I'm telling those who choose to come late that they have a choice to make.  I feel strongly that the boys realize that the choices they make all have consequences.  I'm hoping they ask themselves, "which practice do I miss part of?"

Obviously, I hope they choose baseball practice.

I care about the kids and the difficult choices they face, but I do not care about volleyball.  I am the baseball coach.  Although it is volleyball season and not baseball season, these boys signed up for baseball first.  It is clear where I feel their first commitment should be.

As you may be aware, volleyball and baseball are both spring sports in high school and this practice decision might be made easier by these boys answering the question "which sport do I have a better opportunity to excel at in high school?"

I am sorry if you do not agree with my opinion or policy on this.  Just because I feel this way does not mean I am right, but it is the way I feel and I will not waiver from this policy.

Today's game simulation will begin promptly at 5:00.  Players arriving late will not be eligible to pitch in today's session.

Dear Parents,

Just 87 days 'til Opening Day!

Now that the calendar has turned, I need to go over a few items of business.

First, uniforms.  Our hats are in.  Please get over to Sportscene (216 W. Northwest Highway in Palatine), to pick up your hats and  take care of any other uniform needs by January 15th.  If your son was on the team last season, I'd recommend you have him try on last year's uniform to determine exactly what you'll need. Don't forget to order red spikes. You can order spikes online or call Steve at Sportscene (847-359-5040) to see if he can get them.

Next, finances. January 15th is also the date our next installment ($300) is due. Additionally, you can now register your son with Barrinton Youth Baseball online at:  http://www.barringtonyouthbaseball.com/.

Last, whiffle tournament.  It's scheduled the first weekend of our spring break.  I'm canvassing the team to find out how many players will be in town.  Please get back to me at your earliest convenience.

GO BIG RED!
Thanks,
Mike

Dear Parents,

In my last e-mail, I wrote "We will hold a team meeting to discuss off-season goals, uniforms, schedule and finances in the warehouse Monday, November 23rd at 7:00. The correct date of our team meeting should be Monday, November 22.

I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

To get to the old Chicago Cutlery Building (441 Bonner Road), go northwest on Route 12 (Rand Road).  Turn right on Bonner Road and left at Old Rand.  You'll turn almost immediately into a driveway on your left.  Park behind the building and walk up the stairs to the second floor.

Message from Mike Day on 10-26-2004:

Dear Parents,

I am pleased to announce that we will once again have the opportunity to work out at "The Warehouse" (in the old Chicago Cutlery building on Bonner/Route 12 in Wauconda) this off-season.

We will hold a team meeting to discuss off-season goals, uniforms, schedule and finances in the warehouse Monday, November 23rd at 7:00. Please bring a check made out to Barrington Big Red for $250.

We will work out as a team every Saturday afternoon (except 12/25 and 1/1/05) from 2:15 to 3:45. Please arrive at 2:00 to warm-up. Another group will have the warehouse until 2:00. Coach Haskins and Coach Adrien will again be there to train the boys for $6 per player. Siblings are welcome. We will work out once a week in December and January. Beginning in February, we will add an additional team-only workout on Tuesday, without trainers. In March we will add an additional team-only practice (day to be determined). For those three weeks up until Spring Break, we will be practicing three times a week.

I would like to say that our off-season is tame compared to other programs. Most teams work out three times a week beginning in December. My philosophy is that it's the off-season and almost every player is involved in another (in-season) sport. However, it's my belief that championships are won in the off-season and I encourage, (but do not require), hitting or pitching lessons in the off-season as your schedules allow.

Coach Haskins will once again give Big Red players first dibs on lesson times at the warehouse on Thursdays and Sundays. He is also giving Big Red players a discounted rate of $25 per half-hour lesson. Please call Dave at 847-650-3274 or 847-718-1349 to reserve your lesson time by Friday. On Saturday, Dave will be opening his times to everyone else.

Please confirm receipt of this e-mail!

GO BIG RED!

Message from Mike Day on 08-27-2004:

Dear Parents,

Welcome to the 2005 14 Year-Old Barrington Big Red Baseball Travel Team!

I am especially proud to welcome two new players, Chris Holke and Owen Hull. Both young men are great additions who can help us build on a very successful 2004 campaign that included five firsts, two seconds and a third place tournament finish.

I'm really looking forward to next season!

We are once again very fortunate to welcome back Coach Dave Haskins. Coach Haskins is a phenomenal resource who will accelerate the boys' high school baseball readiness in this, their last year, before entering Barrington High School.

We will play approximately 65 games with one weekend off each month from April through July. We have the opportunity to play home games at Sage Field in Cary, Beese Park in Barrington and possibly Barrington High School (BYB is looking into scheduling opportunities at B.H.S.). We will enter one (overnight) out-of-state tournament, most likely in June at the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska.

Once again, we will play in the area's premier travel league, the Suburban Power Baseball League, a 60'/90' league.

Optional indoor, off-season training will begin at the conclusion of the football season. Mandatory training will begin in January, 2005. Site and time to be determined.

I am tentatively (and liberally) estimating the budget (all fees, including off-season training and the BYB fee) at $850. This number does not include uniforms, as we intend to use last year's.

We will have a team meeting at our indoor facility in late October or early November. At this meeting we will discuss organizational issues and meet with each player to discuss his strengths, weaknesses and off-season goals. In the meantime, if you have any questions or comments, please contact me at 847-809-0688 or barringtonbigred@comcast.net. You can also visit our website, barringtonbigred.com.

Please e-mail me to confirm receipt of this e-mail.

Message from Mike Day on 08-18-2004:

Dear Big Red Parents --

Thanks again for the great year in 2004. We had a terrific group of boys and a great group of parents. And the Sage folks were pretty sensational, too.

I wanted to communicate with all of you regarding Big Red Travel Baseball for 2005. We have been approached by members of the board of BYB who have expressed great interest in having the Big Red program once again be part of BYB. While we are somewhat hesitant to make that commitment due to disappointments and changes of heart by BYB in the past, we have been reassured that things are different now.

In fact, in meeting with the travel commission, I am convinced that things are, in fact, different. I believe that the current travel commission members have the best interest of the community in mind and would like the opportunity to welcome Big Red back into the fold. I have been skeptical of this from the start due to my past experiences, but I am, at this time, convinced that it will be in the best interest of our boys and of the community to be part of the BYB program.

Practically speaking, this means very little in terms of change. We have asked for, and been granted, a number of written guarantees that we consider important to Big Red. These requests include working with Coach Haskins, setting our own schedule, being able to play in the Power League, keeping our uniform style, going to 60'/90', returning to Omaha (if we so choose) and playing a number of games at Sage Field, among others. BYB wants some input into the tryout process, and I am comfortable with their request.

I believe the positive experiences of our players has been the greatest influence in this process. Our boys once again met with a great deal of baseball success, comported themselves well and represented our community in stellar fashion. This apparently turned some heads and our positive reviews have caused the Board to come to us with open arms...imploring us to return.  In this our last year before the boys take their game high school, we'll once again ty our best to inspire and instruct.

I wanted each of you to know from me so you could call myself or Bill Deevy with any questions and not hear this information first from someone else. While I wouldn't change much about 2004, I look forward with the same enthusiasm to the 2005 Big Red experience. Good luck to all at the tryouts.

I will be following this up with a blast e-mail detailing the exact tryout times and fields.

Mike

Dear Parents-

Congratulations on our 5th tournament championship of the season!   What an awesome accomplishment!

I have received directions for our game tomorrow vs. New Trier:

It is south of Lake Ave in Wilmette about 1/4 mile west of the Edens.  I do not know what direction you will be coming from.  If it is 294 you have to get off at Touhy and go north or off at Willow and go east on Willow until you hit 90 then go south one exit to Skokie Blvd to Lake and take a right on Lake.  Go across the highway, past the Dairy Queen and take the left right before the railroad tracks.  If you get to Meyer's Restaurant you have gone too far.  The ball park is just before Meiers Tavern and  behind the apartment buildings. The actual address on Meiers Tavern is 235 East Lake, Glenview

TODAY'S PRACTICE WILL BE FOR TWO HOURS (5:00 - 7:00) AT THE HANDLERS.

Message from Mike Day on 06-21-2004:

Dear Parents,

Today's game start @ Lake Zurich (same field as last week) is 6:00.  Please arrive by 5:15.  The only other thing on our schedue this week is a practice at Handler Field tomorrow...I will tell you the time later today when I e-mail our CWS game schedule.  It is available after 11:00 a.m.

I need to discuss the CWS ticket situation.  We have all received our General Admission (GA) tickets.  Big Red has payed for your son's ticket, and the tournament has blocked out 13 year-old games after 12:30 to allow us to get to Rosenblatt Stadium.  But, as you can see in bullet #4 below, holding a GA ticket does not insure entrance.  People begin lining up early in the morning for a 4:30 gate opening (6:00 game start).

In order to insure a seat, you need reserved seats.  You can purchase up to four of these tickets beginning Thursday, June 24th at 10:00 a.m. for $24/$30 (box) by calling Ticketmaster here (312-559-1212) or in Omaha (402) 422-1212.  We will obviously not be seated together as a team, but you will be gauranteed a seat.  Since many of us will be on the road, make sure to check on Ticketmaster's ticket delivery or will call pick-up policy.  If mailing is their only option, our address in Omaha is:

Comfort Inn at the Zoo
2920 South 13th Court
Omaha, NE 68108

Below is more information regarding College World Series ticket policies:

Approximately 1,200 reserved seat tickets are available for sale for each game at Rosenblatt. Of those 1,200, about 450 are obstructed view tickets. Those purchasing obstructed view tickets are told they are obstructed view. There is no discount for obstructed view tickets.
For the advance sale of reserved-seat tickets, there is a limit of one person buying four sessions and six tickets per session.
Single session, general admission tickets go on sale for that day's games at Rosenblatt Stadium. Tickets go on sale at 10am.
A general admission ticket does not guarantee a seat. It is important for people to arrive early. There are two general admission entrances, one in left field and the other in right field. There are approximately 5,400 seats in general admission. Just because you have a general admission ticket does not guarantee you a seat. If filled to capacity the gates will close. They may reopen after a few innings or ticket holders can hang out in the plaza area.
Upgrading a general admission ticket is on a first-come, first-served basis. When upgrading general admission tickets to reserved tickets, the limit is six tickets for qualifying games and four for championship games.

Beginning at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, June 24th, a limited number of reserved seats for Championship Games 1 and 2 may be purchased through Ticketmaster (Internet, charge-by-phone and select outlets.)

Message from Mike Day on 06-18-2004:

Dear Parents-

The Lumberyard's rules state "each team must be on premises 60 minutes prior to allotted start time."  Please allow for enough time to be at the field by 9:00.

Additionally, I'd like to share a discussion I had with the team before yesterday's game.  I told the boys that I believe our team's competitive difficulty is primarily due to three things:

1) We are not recruited, and most teams we play are.  Obviously, these teams draw from a much larger population pool.
2) We do not allow our pitchers to throw curves.
3) We roster bat, while most teams do not.

I cannot change our team's district 220 makeup this year, nor do I want to next year.  I think there is a charm to being a "town team" that is invaluable.

Bill, Dave and I (and everything you read) feel strongly that throwing curves have an adverse impact on arm health, and will not compromise on this.

Very few teams roster bat in tournaments unless the rules call for it.  Almost every team in the SPBL does not roster bat in league games.  I believe this puts us at a competitive disadvantage. Historically, Big Red has roster batted in every game with the exception of  two tournaments that mandated otherwise:  Genoa City as nine year-olds and last year at Cooperstown.  I do not believe it is a coincidence that we won in Genoa City and we were very competitive in the 64-team Cooperstown tourney.  We were batting on a level playing field.  Likewise, in tournaments that call for roster batting, we've been competitive.  When Big Red played as nine and ten year-olds and only lost five games total over two seasons, we were playing in roster bat tournaments (and there were very few recruited teams or curveballs being thrown).

I prefer playing in roster bat tournaments (our own tournament calls for it).  However, because I believe roster batting in tournaments when other teams are batting nine puts us at a competive disadvantage (and because I need to think of the team first), I have decided that in any tournament where roster batting is not mandated, I will bat nine with a DH.  This kind of line up is a National Federation of High Schools rule (which we'll play under in Omaha) and will be more common as we go along.  I made sure to explain to the boys that I am not batting my best nine, I am batting my most productive nine.   I also told the boys that I'm looking at who's hitting and sitting as a fluid situation...not something written in stone.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me.

First, a Bob Voltz update.  Bob looked great yesterday, was in good spirits and happy to be out of ICU.  If all goes well, he'll get to go home to his family tomorrow, where he'll lay low for a couple of weeks.  We're all praying for a speedy recovery!

Next, I'd like to thank Tony Krzysko and Exclaim Inc., for the design and donation of our awesome, professional banner.  What a great job Tony!!!

Finally, we're looking for any amateur cameramen (or women) to film our hitters and pitchers.  Bill and I are hoping to use the video as a learning tool at a future practice.

See you at Sage!  GO BIG RED!

Dear Parents,

May 1st is the first day that reserved tickets go on sale for the College World
Series.  General Admission tickets are $5 each, but there is often up to a 45
minute wait to be seated and of course, there is no guarantee we‘ll be seated
together.  Several coaches who have made this trip before strongly recommend
reserved seating so we can walk right in - even at game time - and still be
together.  They are $17 each.  The one problem we may have is that Thursday, the
day we’re due into Omaha, is an “if necessary” day and there is no guarantee
that any game will be played.  Below is the CWS schedule, take a look at it and
let me know by Thursday if you are interested in purchasing tickets.  Saturday
looks like our surest bet to go to a game as a team/group, and we can request to
be scheduled out of  a tournament game during that time period.

Wednesday
Session #8 6/23 ( Game #11) 1:00 pm

Wednesday
Session #8 6/23  (Game #12) 6:00 pm

Thursday*
Session #9 6/24  (Game #13/14 )1:00 pm (If necessary)

Thursday* Session #9 6/24 (Game #13/14) 6:00 pm (If necessary)

Dear Parents,

Apparently  (and hopefully), our hats are in.   Steve was optimistic that the embroiderers had completed their work and promised to “let (me) know one way or another by  6:00 this evening.”  Unfortunately, I received no such call.  I recommend you call Steve at Sportscene  (359-5040) to confirm if the hats are in, pick up your hat(s) and settle your bill.  If I learn anything new, I’ll e-mail you ASAP.  Sportscene’s hours are 10 - 6.

For those of you who experienced difficulty with Mapquest's page showing Canon Crossing in Hoffman Estates, the best way to go appears to be:

Barrington Road south to Route 59 southwest (veer right).  West (right) on Shoe Factory Road to McDonough Road south (left).  It looks as if you will run right into the park on McDonough, but you may have to turn left onto Nicholson …  Mapquest lists the address as 1600 Nicholson  (the Hoffman Estates Park District site lists the address as “1675 Nickelson”).  For more info, check out the Hoffman Estates Park District site at:

http://www.heparks.org/index.php?loc=map

SUNDAY WILL BE A TWO-HOUR PRACTICE AT SAGE (12:00 to 2:00).

Message from Mike Day on 03-28-2004:

Dear Parents,

Our schedule this week calls for practices Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.  We were hoping for good weather to allow us to practice outdoors. However, the weather forecast for all three days is for low 40's and rain or snow. If this forecast holds true, we will be forced to practice inside at the warehouse. It is a luxury to have this facility. However, there is only so much we can do inside and if the weather is inclement we will not practice inside three consecutive days.

Assuming the weather forecast is correct, Tuesday's practice will be inside from 5:00 to 6:30.  Thursday's will be inside from 4:30 to 6:00.  There will not be a practice Wednesday unless the weather changes.  We are still hoping to get outside Saturday for 12:00 field work (fathers and sons) followed by a 2:00 practice at Sage. Of course, this is all weather-permitting.  Directions to Sage Field are available at www.barringtonbigred.com under "schedules."

Unless you here from me, these will be our practice times for the week.

We are keeping our fingers crossed for some dry weather to allow Larry Sheetz to finish the work necessary to have Sage Field game-ready. Larry is donating his time and machinery to make Sage playable.  Likewise, Fritz Handler has gone to great lengths (and expense) to have Handler Field (The Hand) ready for Big Red to practice on.

We are truly blessed to have Larry and Fritz on our team.  THANK YOU!!

Our uniforms were almost completely sewn when I talked to Steve Biro at Sportscene Thursday.  He assured me that everything will be done this week.  I'll keep you posted.

SEVEN DAYS TO OPENING DAY!!!  GO BIG RED!!!

BARRINGTON BIG RED

Schedule Notes

The attached version of our schedule has several changes and additions. It is a firm schedule....95% of these games have been confirmed. However, we always have changes (teams cancel or request changes, some don't have their home field availability, inclement weather etc.). Additionally, some practice (sites) and game times have not beem determined. I have marked those "TBA" From here on out, I'll keep you posted via e-mail of any additions or changes.

I'd rather drop from, than add to our schedule. For example, I've scheduled three successive practices from March 30th through April 1st. I'm hoping to get two good weather days for outside practices in that span. However, unanticipated schedule gaps or our play may dictate adding a practice here or there.

July's large gap on the schedule is left open for the required seeding games for the Buffalo Grove Tournament.

The warehouse will be open on Sundays from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm during Spring Break. These practices are not mandatory. However, I would like you to e-mail me at your earliest convenience if you intend to attend March 21st and/or March 28th. I need to notify the instructors if they are not needed for those weekends. The warehouse session on March 14th will depend on how we play (and are seeded) the day before.

OFF WEEKENDS WILL NOT BE CHANGED FOR ANY REASON!!!!

Message from Mike Day on 11-30-2003:

Hi-

Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving!  I am certainly thankful for all the dads who helped carry carpeting up two flights of stairs this morning!  I am especially thankful for Larry (and Jack) Sheetz, who met me extra-early this morning at Home Depot with his truck,  to haul that heavy load up to the warehouse.  Thank you Larry!

Just a few matters of business...If you haven't turned in your 12/1 installment - $350 - please send it to Rick Batliner at  25489 Wagon Wheel in Barrington (60010).  Thanks.

Next, if you (or your son) is interested in playing catcher this season, please (have your son) bring catcher's gear - including a cup.  Catchers will stay after for about 20 minutes to work exclusively at that position.  This is optional.

Additionally, Coach Kaz has informed me that he has lost three students due to a broken arm and two brothers moving out of the area.  If you are interested in instruction in any facet of baseball, especially hitting, call Coach Kaz at 847-462-0046 before these openings are filled.  He charges Big Red families a reduced rate of $25/half-hour.

Finally, uniform info will be disseminated by Wednesday.  It looks like we will be working with a local store - we're waiting to see if the final quote is in our price range - which will allow each player to try the uniform on before ordering.  A big thank you goes to Kathy Handler for exploring so many uniform options so Big Red players can get both value and service.  Thank you Kathy!

GO BIG RED!!!

Dear Parents,

We are fortunate to have so many great parents "stepping up to the plate" for Big Red, like Kathy Handler on uniforms and Bob Weisshappel on our website.  Jennifer Deevy is "taking one for the team" by managing our fundraising this season.

On Sunday morning, we will discuss the framework of our fundraising effort this season.  This being our inaugural season as an independent team, fundraising is new to many of us and will continue to be a work-in-progress.

In a nutshell, this  phase of our plan consists of divvying up Barrington area businesses, with all proceeds being equally distributed among Big Red families to reduce their share of the financial load.  Any funds raised through employers, family or non-Barrington area businesses will go directly to reduce the financial liability of the family responsible for raising those funds.

Personal relationships will be the key to success in this phase of our fundraising campaign.  For Sunday's meeting, please think of Barrington area businesses that you have formed a relationship with.  Try to think of 3 to 5 businesses you can walk into with our fundraising letter, and another 5 to 7 you can personalize (with a short note) and mail.

We will provide each family with 10 color copies of our fundraising letter (copied only for the cost of paper by Tony Krzysko!!  THANKS TONY!!) Jennifer will m
